چکیده

In this paper, we describe our experiences in deploying ORC infrastructures for a novel 32-bit VLIW DSP processor (known as PAC core), which equips with new architectural features, such as distributed and ‘ping-pong’ register files. We also present methods in retargeting ORC compilers for PAC VLIW DSP processors. In addition, mechanisms are proposed to incorporate register allocation policies in the compiler framework for distributed register files in PAC architectures. In the early design stage, several iterations of tuning are needed between architecture and software designs. Our work gives an early estimation of architecture performance so that refinements of architectures are possible with the software feedbacks.

Compiler Supports and Optimizations for PAC VLIW DSP Processors

The Parallel Architecture Core (PAC) is a new VLIW DSP architecture, featuring a two cluster design, and partitioned, distributed register files with restricted access ports. Such an irregular processor poses many challenges in the construction of its compiler. This paper presents our work in providing the compilation support for PAC, based on the Open Research Compiler (ORC). We describe the d...

Copy Propagation Optimizations for VLIW DSP Processors with Distributed Register Files

High-performance and low-power VLIW DSP processors are increasingly deployed on embedded devices to process video and multimedia applications. For reducing power and cost in designs of VLIW DSP processors, distributed register files and multi-bank register architectures are being adopted to eliminate the amount of read/write ports in register files. This presents new challenges for devising com...

Effective Code Generation for Distributed and Ping-Pong Register Files: A Case Study on PAC VLIW DSP Cores

The compiler is generally regarded as the most important software component that supports a processor design to achieve success. This paper describes our application of the open research compiler infrastructure to a novel VLIW DSP (known as the PAC DSP core) and the specific design of code generation for its register file architecture. The PAC DSP utilizes port-restricted, distributed, and part...

PALF: compiler supports for irregular register files in clustered VLIW DSP processors

Wide varieties of register file architectures — developed for embedded processors — have turned to aim at reducing the power dissipation and die size these years, by contrast with the traditional unified register file structures. This article presents a novel register allocation scheme for a clustered VLIW DSP, which is designed with distinctively banked register files in which port access is h...

An Advanced Compiler Designed for a VLIW DSP for Sensors-Based Systems

The VLIW architecture can be exploited to greatly enhance instruction level parallelism, thus it can provide computation power and energy efficiency advantages, which satisfies the requirements of future sensor-based systems. However, as VLIW codes are mainly compiled statically, the performance of a VLIW processor is dominated by the behavior of its compiler. In this paper, we present an advan...
